Friday morning. Same road, same city, and the same crowd that was singing for him on the Sunday is shouting for somebody else. They put a sign over his head as a joke. Nobody is laughing by noon.
Then the sky goes black in the middle of the day, for three hours. The man beside him asks to be remembered and gets a promise. He gives his mother a son. The curtain in the temple tears from top to bottom and nobody touched it.
Three words, said like a man putting something down. It was not taken from him. Then a borrowed grave, a stone across the door, and everybody goes home.
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.

Friday morning
Same road, same city
Same crowd that was singing on the Sunday
Shouting something else now
Give us the other one, we said it
We picked the other one, we said it
They put a sign above his head
Made a joke out of a king
And nobody was laughing
Nobody was laughing by noon
Then the sky went black in the middle of the day
Three hours of it
And the birds stopped and the whole city went quiet
It is finished
Three words, and he said them like a man
Putting something down
It is finished
It was not taken from him
He put it down
Man beside him turned his head, remember me
Said remember me
And he said today, you'll be with me today
Dying man making promises
And he meant it
God knows he meant it
Then he looked down at his mother
Said woman, here's your son
Still giving things away right at the end
It is finished
Three words, and he said them like a man
Putting something down
It is finished
It was not taken from him
He put it down
Into your hands
Into your hands
It is finished
Into your hands
The curtain in the temple tore
Top to bottom, and nobody touched it
And the soldier who put him up there
Looked up and said it out loud
It is finished
Three words, and he said them like a man
Putting something down
It is finished
It was not taken from him
He put it down
They took him down before the sun went
Laid him in a borrowed grave
Rolled a stone across the door
And everybody went home
